INSIGHTS & NOTES FROM
CHAPTER 59
"The church's salvation comes from the hand of God, & that has not waxed weak nor is it at all shortened" "...his ear ...is quick of hearing." "If your prayers be not answered, & the salvation we wait for be not wrought for us, it is not because God is weary of hearing prayer, but because we are weary of praying, not because his ear is heavy when we speak to him, but because our ears are heavy when he speaks to us." "Sin hides his face from us (which denotes great displeasure, Deut. 31:17); it provokes him to anger to withdraw his gracious presence, to suspend the tokens of his favour & the instances of his help; he hides his face, as refusing to be seen or spoken with." "When justice is not done there is blame to be had not only upon the magistrates that should administer justice, but upon the people that should call for it." "Truth is opposed, & there is not any that pleads for it, not any that has the conscience & courage to appear in defence of an honest cause, & confront a prosperous fraud & wrong." "Those paths of iniquity are crooked paths" "If we shut our eyes against the light of divine truth, it is just with God to hide from our eyes the things that belong to our peace" "Those that love darkness rather than light shall have their doom accordingly." "To think an ill thing is bad, but to say it is much worse." "...the sin of a nation becomes national, & brings public judgments, when it is not restrained by public justice." "If men be not zealous against sin, God will, & will take vengeance on it for all the injury it has done to his honour & his people's welfare; & this was the business of Christ in the world, to take away sin" "When God's people are weak & helpless, & have no standard to lift up against the invading power, God will give a banner to those that fear him (Ps. 9:4)." "...the Spirit of God shall come to us to be our sanctifier" "The Spirit that was upon Christ shall always continue in the hearts of the faithful" CHAPTER 60 "God is the father & fountain of lights, & it is in his light that we shall see light." "When God appears to us, & we have the comfort of his favour, then the glory of the Lord rises upon us as the morning light" "The children of light ought to shine as lights in the world." "Those that would enjoy the dignities & privileges of Christ's family must submit to the discipline of it." "God must be served & honoured with what we have, according as he has blessed us, & with the best we have." "What a pleasant sight it is to see poor souls hastening to Christ, with a full resolution to abide with him!" "Christ is always ready to entertain those that come to him, is never out of the way, nor can they ever come unseasonably; the gate of mercy is always open, night & day, or shall soon be opened to those that knock. Ministers, the door-keepers, must be always ready to admit those that offer themselves to the Lord." "Those that will not be subject to Christ's golden sceptre, to the government of his word & Spirit, that will not be brought under, or kept in, by the discipline of his family, shall be broken in pieces by his iron rod." "Sooner or later God will pour contempt upon those that put contempt upon his people." "Those that make God their only light shall have him their all-sufficient light, their arm & shield." "God is the glory of those whose God he is & will be so to eternity." CHAPTER 61 "This is a great satisfaction to us, that, whatever Christ said, he had a warrant from heaven for; his doctrine was not his, but his that sent him." "1. He was to be a preacher" "2. He was to be a healer" "3. He was to be a deliverer" "4. He was to be a comforter" "There is enough in him to comfort all who mourn, whatever their sore or sorrow is" "Those whom God sets at liberty he sets to work; he delivers them out of the hands of their enemies that they may serve him, Luke 1:74." "Those that have God & heaven for their portion have reason to say that they have a worthy portion & to rejoice in it." "...to those that walk before him & are upright he will certainly be a God all-sufficient." "Though it may sometimes be winter with the church, when those blessings seem to wither & do not appear, yet the root of them is fixed, a spring-time will come, when through the reviving beams of the approaching Sun of righteousness they shall flourish again." CHAPTER 62 "The business of ministers is to speak from God to his people & to God for his people; & in neither of these must they be silent." "The prophet can but pray & preach, but God will confirm the word & answer the prayers." "Ministers are watchmen on the church's walls" "It is necessary that, as watchmen, they be wakeful, & faithful, & willing to endure hardness." "God's professing people must be a praying people, must be public-spirited in prayer, must wrestle with God in prayer, & continue to do so" "We must, when we have eaten & are full, bless the Lord, & give him thanks for his bounty to us; & we must serve him with our abundance" Matthew Henry's Commentary: Isaiah to Malachi, Mac Donald, pgs. 342 - 366.
