INSIGHTS & NOTES FROM
CHAPTER 8
"The soul may be at liberty when the body is in captivity; for, when we are bound, the Spirit of the Lord is not bound." "Those kingdoms which, when they had power, abused it, &, because none could oppose them, withheld not themselves from the doing of any wrong, may expect to have their power at length taken from them, & to be served in their own kind. Isaiah 33:1." "Those that heap up riches know not who shall gather them, nor whose all those things shall be which they have provided." "Those who persecute the people of God persecute God himself." "When the pleasant land & all its pleasant things are laid waste, it must be acknowledged that sin is the procuring cause of all the desolation." "It is just with God to deprive those of the privileges of his house who despise & profane them" "If we would know the mind of God, we must apply to Jesus Christ, who lay is the bosom of the Father, & in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom & knowledge, not hidden from us, but hidden for us." "God sometimes gives in great favours to his people, in answer to the enquiries & requests of their friends for them." "Though the righteous God may, for the correction of his people, suffer his sanctuary to be profaned for a while, yet the jealous God will, for his own glory, see to the cleansing of it in due time. Christ died to cleanse his church; & he will so cleanse it as at length to present it blameless to himself." "Those that rightly know the things of God cannot but desire to know more & more of them, & to be led further into the mystery of them; & those that would find the meaning of what they have seen or heard from God must seek it, & seek it diligently. Seek & you shall find." "...if God design instruction for us, he will by his grace awaken us out of our slumber, raise us from things below, & set us upright." "Let not the strong man then glory in his strength, be it ever so great, unless he could be sure that there were none stronger than he." "Divine truths should be sealed up among our treasures, that we may find them again after many days." "Those especially that are entrusted with public business must see to it that they conscientiously discharge their trust." CHAPTER 9 "The greatest & best men in the world must not think themselves above their Bibles." "God's promises are intended, not to supersede, but to excite & encourage, our prayers; &, when we see the day of the performance of them approaching, we should the more earnestly plead them with God & put them in suit." "When the day of deliverance dawns it is time for God's praying people to bestir themselves" "In every prayer we must make confession, not only of the sins we have been guilty of (which we commonly call confession), but of our faith in God & dependence upon him, our sorrow for sin & our resolutions against it." "Keeping the covenant & mercy to those that love him, &, as a proof of their love to him, keep his commandments. If we fulfil our part of the bargain, he will not fail to fulfil his." "We should, in prayer, look both at God's greatness & his goodness, his majesty & mercy in conjunction." "Mocking God's messengers, & despising his words, were Jerusalem's meaure-filling sins" "We obeyed not his voice, & (v. 15) we have sinned, we have done wickedly. Those that would find mercy must thus confess their sins." "We have not entreated the face of the Lord our God" "'...we have taken no care to make our peace with God & reconcile ourselves to him.'" "It is very encouraging to poor sinners to recollect that mercies belong to God, as it is convincing & humbling to them to recollect that righteousness belongs to him; & those who give him the glory of his righteousness may take to themselves the comfort of his mercies. Psalms 62:12." "...he is a God of pardons" "Though we have rebelled against him, yet with him there is mercy, pardoning mercy, even for the rebellious" "Sin is a reproach to any people, but especially to God's people, that have more eyes upon them & have more honour to lose than other people." "Cause thy face to shine & then we shall be saved" "That he would forgive their sins, & then hasten their deliverance... O Lord! hear; O Lord! forgive." "Whenever we come to God for mercy we must lay aside all conceit of, & confidence in, our own righteousness." "The desolations of the church must in prayer be laid before God & then left with him." "Those who are heartily concerned for the glory of God, the welfare of the church, & the souls of men, will mourn for the sins of others as well as for their own." "God is very ready to hear prayer & to give an answer of peace." "Angels themselves are to us what he makes them to be; they are his ministers, & do his pleasure. Psalms 103:21." "In order to the keeping up of our communion with God we must not only be forward to speak to God, but as forward to hear what he has to say to us" "...what greater token can there be of God's favour to any man than for the secrets of the Lord to be with him?" "Those who would understand the things of God must consider them, must apply their minds to them, ponder upon them, & compare spiritual things wtih spiritual." "God not only grants, but outdoes, the desires of those that fear him. Psalms 21:4." "...as long as we are here in this world we must expect troublous times, upon some account or other." "But this is our comfort, that God will carry on his own work... will beautify it, will fortify it, even in troublous times" "God might justly have made an end of the sin by making an end of the sinner; but Christ found out another way, & so made an end of sin as to save the sinner from it, by providing a righteousness for him." "He causes all the peace-offerings to cease when he has made peace by the blood of his cross, & by it confirmed the covenant of peace & reconciliation." CHAPTER 10
