INSIGHTS & NOTES FROM
CHAPTER 107
"...the redeemed of the Lord ...They have, of all people, most reason to say that God is good, & his mercy everlasting; these are the children of God that were scattered abroad, whom Christ died to gather together in one, out of all lands. John 11:52; Matt 24:31." "God knows those that are his, & where to find them." "We ought to take notice of the good hand of God's providence over us in our journeys, going out & coming in, directing us in our way, & providing for us places both to bait in & rest in." "God's providence finds out ways to satisfy the longing soul & fill the hungry soul with goodness." "Those that hunger & thirst after righteousness, after God, the living God, & communion with him, shall be abundantly replenished with the goodness of his house, both in grace & glory." "It is expected of those who receive mercy from God that they return praise to him." "Willful sin is rebellion against the words of God, it is a contradiction to his truths & a violation of his laws." "When God will work deliverance the greatest difficulties that lie in the way shall be made nothing of." "Prayer is a salve for every sore." "When those that have been sick are restored they must return to God an answer of praise." "Quietness after a storm is a very desirable thing, & sensibly pleasant." "Worldly wealth is an uncertain thing" "It is of great use to us... to be fully assured of God's goodness, to be experimentally acquainted & duly affected with it, that his lovingkindness may be before our eyes." CHAPTER 108 "We must praise God with fixedness of heart." "We must praise God with freeness of expression" "We must praise God with fervency of affection, & must stir up ourselves to do it, that it may be done in a lively manner & not carelessly" "We must praise God publicly, as those that are not ashamed" "We must, in our praises, magnify the mercy & truth of God in a special manner" "We must be public-spirited in prayer" "We must, in prayer, set faith upon the power & promise of God - upon his power (Save with thy right hand, which is mighty to save) & upon his promise" "What he has promised he will perform, for it is the will both of his truth & of his power." "We must take encouragement from the beginnings of mercy to pray & hope for the perfecting of it" "We must not be discouraged in prayer, nor beaten off from our hold of God, though Providence has in some instances frowned upon us" "We must seek help from God, renouncing all confidence in the creature" "We must depend entirely upon the favour & grace of God, both for strength & success in our work & warfare." "...it is God himself that treads down our enemies" "Whatever we do, whatever we gain, God must have all the glory." CHAPTER 109 "Forasmuch as God is the God of our mercies we must make him the God of our praises; if all is of him & from him, all must be to him, & for him." "A good man is made up of prayer, gives himself to prayer, as the apostles. Acts 6:4." "Those that mismanage their trusts will justly have their office taken from them & given to those that will approve themselves faithful." "...he (God) will one day recompense tribulation to those that trouble his people." "If God be for us, he will do for us, will do more abundantly for us than we are able either to ask or think." "He (the Psalmist) values the blessing of God as sufficient to counterbalance their curses" "If God bless us, we need not care who curses us" "Men's curses are impotent; God's blessings are omnipotent" "Let all those that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him." CHAPTER 110 "Sitting at the right hand of God denotes both his dignity & his dominion, the honour put upon him & the trusts reposed in him by the Father. All the favours that come from God to man, & all the service that comes from man to God, pass through his hand." "The gospel of Christ, being sent of God, is mighty through God to do wonders. II Corinthians 10:4." "Christ's church is a lily among thorns, & his disciples are sent forth as sheep in the midst of wolves." "Whoever are willing to be Christ's people, it is the free & mighty grace of God that makes them so." "The dew of our youth, even in the morning of our days, ought to be consecrated to our Lord Jesus." "Christ's sitting at the right hand of God speaks as much terror to his enemies as happiness to his people." "The greatest of men, that set themselves against Christ, shall be made to fall before him." Matthew Henry's Commentary: Job To Song Of Solomon, Mac Donald, pgs. 646 - 662.
